Butter Commerce

Acceptable Use Policy

Effective: 14 August 2026

Last updated: 14 August 2026

This policy is part of the Terms of Use. It applies to everyone who uses Butter Commerce, and to anyone you give access to.

The short version: build what you want, but do not break the law with it, do not attack the platform, and do not pass our work off as yours.

We would rather write a short policy and apply it with judgement than enumerate every bad idea in advance. Where something is borderline, ask us.

1. Do not break the law

Do not use the Services to violate any law that applies to you or to your shoppers, including consumer protection, advertising, sanctions, export control, tax, privacy, and anti-money-laundering law.

You are responsible for what you sell and what you say about it. If your Shopify store cannot lawfully sell something, connecting it to Butter does not change that.

2. Prohibited content and commerce

Do not use the Services in connection with:

  • content that sexually exploits or endangers children — we report this to authorities without notice;

  • goods or services whose sale is illegal in the jurisdictions you sell to, including controlled substances, weapons and weapon components where restricted, and stolen goods;

  • fraud, counterfeit goods, pirated media, or infringement of anyone's intellectual property;

  • deceptive commerce: fake scarcity, fabricated reviews, undisclosed subscriptions, dark patterns designed to make cancellation difficult, or pricing displays intended to mislead;

  • harassment, threats, or content promoting violence or hatred against people on the basis of a protected characteristic;

  • multi-level marketing schemes, pyramid schemes, or investment offers you are not licensed to make.

Where a product is legal but restricted — alcohol, tobacco and vapes, cannabis, adult content, firearms accessories, gambling — you must comply with every applicable restriction and with Shopify's own acceptable use terms. Shopify's rules apply to your store regardless of what we say here.

3. Do not attack or overload the Services

Do not:

  • access the Services other than through the interfaces and APIs we provide;

  • probe, scan, or test the security of the Services except under a disclosure process we have agreed in advance;

  • circumvent or attempt to circumvent authentication, rate limits, plan limits, licensing checks, or any usage restriction;

  • automate requests at a volume that degrades the Services for anyone else, or scrape our Site or APIs at scale;

  • introduce malware, or use the Services to distribute it;

  • interfere with another customer's use, or attempt to access data that is not yours;

  • use the Services to send unsolicited bulk email, or in a way that gets our infrastructure blocklisted.

Rate limits. We apply rate limits and fair-use limits to protect the platform. Current limits are published in our documentation. We may adjust them, and we will tell you before restricting an account for volume unless the load is causing active harm.

4. Do not resell or repackage the Product

Do not:

  • resell, sublicense, or redistribute the Product or its components as a standalone product;

  • extract Butter components, templates, or Butter Blocks and distribute them outside a storefront built on the Product;

  • use the Product to build a service that offers Butter's functionality to third parties;

  • reverse engineer the Product, except where that restriction is unenforceable by law;

  • remove or obscure our notices, or present the Product as your own.

Building storefronts for clients is fine and expected. Building a competing product on top of ours is not.

5. Do not misuse shopper data

If you use Butter's analytics, Recipes, or integrations to process data about your shoppers:

  • have a lawful basis, and give shoppers the notice the law requires;

  • obtain consent where it is required, including cookie and tracking consent — see the Cookie Notice;

  • do not configure the Product to collect special category data — health, biometrics, precise geolocation, political or religious belief, sexual orientation — or the data of anyone under 16;

  • do not use Recipes to discriminate against shoppers on the basis of a protected characteristic;

  • do not attempt to re-identify anyone from de-identified data, or use Butter's data to build a profile of someone across sites you do not operate.

6. Do not install where you are not authorized

Install the Product only on Shopify stores you own or are authorized to work on. When an engagement ends, hand the store over or shut the plan down.

7. Reporting

Tell us about a violation at abuse@buttercommerce.co.

Report a security vulnerability to security@buttercommerce.co. We will acknowledge within 3 business days and we will not pursue action against good-faith researchers who report responsibly, avoid privacy violations and service disruption, and give us reasonable time to fix the issue before disclosing.

8. What happens if you break this policy

Depending on severity, we may: ask you to fix it; limit or throttle a feature; suspend the account; or terminate it.

We will contact you first where we reasonably can. Immediate suspension without notice is reserved for cases involving active harm to the platform or another customer, illegal content, or a legal requirement.

Suspension for a violation does not entitle you to a refund. If you think we got it wrong, reply and we will look again — we would rather resolve it than lose you.

9. Changes

We may update this policy as new patterns of abuse appear. Material changes are notified as described in the Terms.
